- Only the task is graded. If the exercise says "Try saying: sun, soap, smile", you're scored on those three words — not on reading the instructions aloud.
- Near-misses count. Recognition hears "sun" as "son" all the time. Close matches still score.
- Open-ended prompts aren't faked. "Tell me about your morning routine" has no right answer, so it's scored on delivery instead of accuracy.
- Pace is measured, not guessed. Words per minute against a conversational band.
No account, and we never hear you
There is nothing to sign up for. We receive no audio, store no recordings and hold no database of users — your progress is saved in your own browser and cleared when you clear site data.
One thing worth knowing: browsers handle speech recognition themselves, and most send the audio to their own maker to transcribe it — Chrome to Google, Edge to Microsoft. Safari does it on your device. That happens on any site using speech recognition, and we explain it fully in the Privacy Policy.
Common questions
Is this a replacement for speech therapy?
No. SpeakEase is a practice tool for rehearsing between sessions or building a daily habit. It cannot assess, diagnose, or treat a speech or language disorder. If you have concerns about your speech, see a licensed speech-language pathologist.
Does it cost anything?
No. There is no account, no trial, and no payment. Everything runs in your browser.
Which browsers work?
Scoring needs the Web Speech API, which is supported in Chrome, Edge and Safari. In browsers without it you can still read every exercise and use the technique tips, but attempts won't be scored.
Do I need a good microphone?
Any built-in laptop or phone microphone works. Quiet surroundings matter more than hardware — background noise is the most common cause of a low accuracy score.
Can I practise in a language other than English?
Yes. Recognition supports 22 languages, and the assistant voice can read prompts in 11. Exercise content is currently written in English.
