1. Agreement

These terms are between you and the operator of speakeaseapp.com ("SpeakEase", "we", "us"). By using the site or the app, you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use SpeakEase.

2. What SpeakEase is

SpeakEase provides guided speech practice exercises that you read or speak aloud, with automated feedback generated in your browser. It is free, requires no account, and is offered for personal, educational and self-practice use.

The exercises reference techniques associated with recognised approaches to speech and voice work. They are presented for general educational interest. Their inclusion is not an endorsement by, or affiliation with, any clinician, researcher, institution or rights-holder associated with those approaches, and following them here is not equivalent to receiving that therapy.

3. Not medical advice

Content on SpeakEase is general information, not medical, clinical or therapeutic advice, and creates no clinician–patient relationship. Do not delay seeking professional advice because of something you read or heard here. If you experience pain, strain, dizziness, hoarseness or any discomfort while practising, stop and consult a professional. Voice exercises in particular can strain the vocal folds if pushed too hard.

4. Accuracy of scores

Scores are produced by comparing an automated transcript of your speech with the exercise's target phrase. Speech recognition is imperfect and is affected by background noise, microphone quality, accent, speech differences and language. A low score may reflect a recognition failure rather than your speech, and a high score does not mean your speech is clinically typical. Treat scores as rough practice feedback only.

5. Who may use it

You must be at least 13 years old to use SpeakEase on your own (16 where required by local law). Younger children are welcome to use it under the supervision of a parent, carer or clinician.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use SpeakEase for any unlawful purpose, or in any way that could harm, disable or overburden it;
• attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service or its infrastructure;
• use automated means to send large volumes of requests, or to route third-party traffic through our speech synthesis service;
• copy, scrape or redistribute the exercise content at scale, or present it as your own;
• remove or obscure any notice, including the medical disclaimer.

We may rate-limit or block access that appears abusive, in order to keep the service free and available to everyone else.

7. Your content

You keep everything you say. We do not receive, record or store your speech, and we claim no rights over it. Practice data stays in your browser, as described in our Privacy Policy.

8. Our content

The exercise text, design, code and branding of SpeakEase belong to us or our licensors. You may use them personally, and clinicians and educators are welcome to use SpeakEase with clients and students at no cost. You may not republish the content as a competing product or claim authorship of it.

9. Third-party services

SpeakEase relies on features and services it does not control, including your browser's speech recognition and synthesis, and a third-party text-to-speech provider for the assistant voice. Their availability, accuracy and data handling are governed by their own terms. See section 3 of the Privacy Policy for what this means for your microphone audio.

10. Availability

SpeakEase is provided as-is and may change, break or be withdrawn at any time without notice. Features that depend on a browser capability may not work in every browser. We do not guarantee that your practice data will persist — it lives in your browser and can be lost if you clear site data, switch device or use a private window. Use "Move progress" to keep a copy.

11. Disclaimer of warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, SpeakEase is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and uninterrupted availability. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data, or any outcome arising from reliance on scores or content provided by SpeakEase. Since SpeakEase is provided free of charge, our total aggregate liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid to use it (zero) or the minimum permitted by applicable law.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the date at the top will change and continued use means acceptance. Material changes will be noted on the home page.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon and the federal laws of the United States, and the state and federal courts located in Oregon have non-exclusive jurisdiction. Nothing here removes consumer protections you have under the mandatory law of your own country.
