SpeakEaseSpeech Practice

Privacy Policy

The short version

  • There is no account. We do not ask for your name, email or any other identifying detail.
  • Your practice progress is stored in your own browser, not on a server we control.
  • We never receive, store or listen to your microphone audio.
  • Your browser, however, may send that audio to its own maker — Google in Chrome, Microsoft in Edge — because that is how browser speech recognition works. Details below.
  • No advertising, no tracking pixels, no cookies.

1. Who we are

SpeakEase is a free, browser-based speech practice tool operated by the owner of speakeaseapp.com ("we", "us"). You can reach us at privacy@speakeaseapp.com.

2. What we collect

Directly, from you: nothing. SpeakEase has no sign-up, no login, no contact form and no payment. We do not operate a database of users, because there are no user accounts to store.

Information that exists while you use SpeakEase is described below, along with where it goes.

3. Microphone audio — please read this section

When you press the microphone button, your browser listens and converts your speech to text using the Web Speech API, a feature built into the browser itself. SpeakEase never receives an audio recording, and no audio file is uploaded to, stored on, or played back from any server we operate.

That is not the same as your audio never leaving your device. Most browsers implement speech recognition as a network service:

We have no control over, visibility into, or agreement with these services — they are part of your browser, and the same processing happens on any website that uses speech recognition. We disclose it because you deserve to know before speaking into a microphone.

If you would prefer your speech not to be transmitted to a browser vendor, use Safari, or use SpeakEase without pressing the microphone: every exercise, target phrase and technique tip is fully readable without recording anything.

4. The assistant's voice

When the assistant reads a prompt aloud, the text of that prompt — never your voice — may be sent to our speech synthesis service, which uses Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services to generate the audio. The text sent is fixed exercise content written by us, and contains nothing about you. Requests are cached so that each phrase is generated once and reused.

If that service is unavailable, or if you use SpeakEase offline, the assistant voice falls back to your device's own built-in voices and nothing is sent anywhere.

5. What is stored in your browser

SpeakEase uses your browser's local storage — not cookies — to remember:

This data never leaves your browser unless you choose to move it yourself using the "Move progress" feature, which encodes it into a code you can copy. That code travels only where you paste it.

6. Cookies and analytics

SpeakEase sets no cookies. As of the date above we run no analytics, no advertising and no third-party trackers. If we later add analytics, we will use a privacy-preserving, cookieless service that does not build profiles of individuals, and we will update this page before doing so.

7. Deleting your data

Because everything is stored locally, you are in full control. Clearing your browsing data for this site — or using a private window — removes all practice history and settings immediately and permanently. There is nothing for us to delete on our side, and no request you need to send us.

8. Children

Speech practice is often relevant to children, and SpeakEase is designed to be usable by them. We collect no personal information from anyone, including children, and there is no account to create. We recommend that a parent, carer or clinician supervise use by a child, particularly regarding the microphone behaviour described in section 3.

9. Your rights

Privacy laws such as the UK/EU GDPR and the CCPA give you rights over personal data held about you — access, correction, deletion, portability and objection. We hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct or erase. You can exercise the practical equivalent at any time by clearing your site data, and you can export your progress yourself with "Move progress".

10. Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Because we hold no user data, there is no user database to breach. Data stored in your browser is protected by your device and browser security — anyone with access to your unlocked device could view your practice history.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change how SpeakEase handles data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Material changes — particularly any that introduce data collection — will be noted on the home page.
